Meet Your Maker

Hi!

I’m Jana, and I started Nuumuus in 2020 when my oldest friend's mom was giving my other oldest friend some old muumuus. I took the leftovers because the fabrics were beautiful, and I knew I wanted to make something with them that fit in more with my daily uniform (high waisted shorts and a crop top). The pun (new muumuus -> nuumuus) came immediately so with that and my 15 years sewing experience, I was in business.

I also started Nuumuus because I didn’t want to compromise: I didn’t want to sacrifice sustainability for style, I didn’t want to trade functionality for beauty, I didn’t want to dress like everybody else, and I wanted clothes to reflect the places I love. Working with heritage fabrics means I get to create one of a kind pieces that fit with your values as well as they fit your effortlessly cool style ;)

With a reminder to touch grass, get in the water, and with love,

The Process

Turning one person’s trash into a piece you’ll treasure

Each Nuumuu is made from repurposed, thrifted fabrics. From muumuus and aloha shirts to tea towels and table clothes, these materials all have a story that speaks volumes when turned into staples for your daily wardrobe. Many of these fabrics feature classic patterns that transform into something fresh and surprising on Nuumuu’s modern silhouettes.

I make as many items as possible from the larger cuts of cloth, but nothing goes to waste! I make the leftovers into quilted tops, dog collar bandanas, and into decorative wall art. Because each Nuumuu is made from a limited amount of fabric, no two are the same. And not only are that - most of the tank styles are reversible so you have two one-of-one looks to choose from!
