About Me

Hi!
I’m Jana, founder, CEO, CFO, studio manager, head seamstress, and social media intern of Nuumuus. I started Nuumuus in 2020 when my oldest friend's mom was giving my other oldest friend some old muumuus. I took the leftovers because the fabrics were beautiful, and I knew I wanted to make something with them that fit in more with my daily uniform (high waisted shorts and a crop top). The pun (new muumuus -> nuumuus) came immediately so I was like, welp, I guess I’m in business now. I’d been interested in thrifting, upcycling, and eco art for most of my life, so this was the perfect way to combine those passions with my 15 years of sewing experience.
Sustainability matters to me because I love places deeply. I have relationships with them. One of my therapists says spending time in spaces we love is a form of intimacy, which is a truth I’ve intuited for a long time but hadn’t put words to. Sustainability can also be an intimidating word because I think we often feel it means making sacrifices. And sometimes it does, but often it means making choices that support the ecosystems, landscapes, and place we care about. I hope wearing your Nuumuu makes you think about the spaces you cherish.
With a reminder to touch grass, get in the water, and with love,
Jana Purington
